How do I disable or turn off a VPN on Windows (and change it?)

Although VPNs can be a good way to access a work network or to surf privately, they can slow down your internet use somewhat. Even if you have changed workstations, you may no longer need access to the work network.

If your network is slow and you want to learn how to disable VPN or even completely remove the VPN profile from your computer, follow these simple instructions.

Note that this manual is intended for VPNs configured with the Windows Embedded VPN Management Software. If your VPN software is provided by your VPN provider (or your employer), you probably just need to click the stop button on the software, although this may vary depending on the software. It is usually accessible via the system tray in the lower right corner.

How to disable VPN?

Switching off the VPN is very simple. Simply go to the part of the operating system with the network connection view.

On Windows 7, 8 and Windows 10

Just follow these steps:

1) Type View network connections in the operating system search bar.

2) Select View network connections in the results.

3) Here you can see all the connections you use to connect to the Internet.

4) Find the VPN you want to disconnect from the connection list.

5) Right-click on the VPN and select Disable

How do I delete a VPN profile?

Once you know how to disable a VPN connection, deleting the VPN connection becomes even easier. Just follow the instructions above, but instead of choosing Disable, simply choose Delete.

Or you can remove the VPN connection. Follow these steps to do so.

1) Type View network connections in the operating system search bar.

2) Select View network connections in the results.

3) Here you can see all the connections you use to connect to the Internet.

4) Find the VPN you want to disconnect from the connection list.

5) Press the connection to mark it.

6) Select Change these connection parameters in the parameter line (left or top of the screen).

7) Select Delete.

8) Select Yes to confirm the uninstallation (if you are sure you want to do it!).

9) The deletion will be confirmed the next time you restart your computer.

In this section you can not only delete or wipe a VPN, but also configure your VPN settings, rename your connection, or create a shortcut to the connection for quick access.

And that’s it.
